Dale Sechrest has
practiced, taught, and published in the field of corrections for over
40 years. His work has focused on the evaluation of corrections
programs, including juvenile diversion, correctional privatization,
substance abuse programs, treatment of mentally ill offenders, victim-offender reconciliation programs, and correctional standards.
Dr. Sechrests
research and scholarship includes research on drug treatment programs,
both methadone maintenance programs nationally and drug courts in California.
Current or recently completed research has focused on the diversion of juvenile offenders, mentally ill offenders released from jail, residential drug treatment, drug courts, juvenile boot camps, violent juvenile offenders, restorative justice, DUI offenders, and telemarketing scams.
Dr. Sechrest has
published extensive research on drug treatment programs, having evaluated
the impact of methadone maintenance on the criminal activity of heroin
addicts in Santa Clara County, California and New York City at the Center for
Criminal Justice at Harvard Law School (1973-74). He has directed community-based
research projects in Santa Clara County, California. He was staff of a
national study of correctional manpower and training (1966-68), and a
Deputy Probation Officer, Contra Costa County, California. He was Deputy Director and Director of the standards and accreditation program of the American Correctional Association (1975-1984). His publications
include articles on correctional standards, privatization in corrections, drug programs, diversion,
restorative justice, and community corrections. Books are The Role of the Helping Professions in Treating the Victims and Perpetrators of Violent Crime (2002), The Changing Career of the Correctional Officer (1998), Three Strikes and You're Out: Vengeance as Public Policy (1996), and Jail Management and Liability Issues (1989). A book is in
progress on program evaluation in corrections.
Dr. Sechrest teaches
undergraduate and graduate corrections courses, research methods, and
statistics.
