Frances Coles has taught and published in the fields of sexual harassment, female offenders, law and social change, and law and criminal justice personnel. Her teaching has focused especially on the relationship between law and society women and crime, and comparative criminal justice.

Dr. Coles’ research and scholarship has included work on the impact of legal changes upon social services to rape and domestic violence victims, definitions of success held by female trial lawyers, sex discrimination law as applied in the criminal justice system, and alternatives to incarceration for adults. She has also studied the Scottish juvenile justice system which utilizes an informal therapeutic jurisprudential approach.
